Step 3 - the 3D architectural
model
Building in 3D is different to physical
building but the visual result is the same. We build a 3D virtual
reality wall in seconds, whereas a builder takes days, months or
years to make a real one. Our wall is built from 3D faces that
exist within a computer data file, the builder's wall is real.
Similar to real life, we cant decorate a scene until we have a
shell to work in. The shell is created from the architectural plans.
Once we create the shell we generate a series of 3D pictures for
approval and final modification. These pictures are far from being
artwork and are purely for checking architectural and structural
accuracy.
We use the CAD files from the architect to build from. Sometimes
we find slight errors in the plans as we create our 3D
model and this helps the architect check accuracy too as we
are testing the structure before the builder does.
The extent of the 3D architectural modelling process includes:
- Placing all walls, doors, windows and fixed (built-in) furniture;
- Constructing the exterior of the building;
- Building all hard landscaping, pools, pathways, podiums, retaining
walls and ground surfaces;
- Ensuring that all surfaces are identified but not truly brought
to life.
Some of our people are dedicated architectural 3D modelers and
they will stay in touch with you and your architect to ensure the
accuracy of the virtual reality version of your project. Unlike
other companies we have this process split from the actual 3D artwork
process. This allows for a faster workflow from specialist skills.
Our advanced systems allow for a perfect workflow between the two
stages, even if alterations are made.
FAQ:
Question |
Answer |
Can Archiform 3D use a 3D model that the
architect has created? |
Maybe, but usually no. We work to a different
level of detail and have different priorities. Sometimes
other 3D models can help in with the interpretation but we
find it easier and faster to start from scratch. |
| Will we discount our fees if the Architect
has a 3D model already? |
No. |
Will we give you or your architect a computer
file of the 3D model we create? |
Yes. We will export various file formats
to your architect if needed for the aid in such items as
mass studies, etc. We will require a written request with
an exact use for the work, which is restricted to our approved
uses. We will not export 3D models in ArchiCAD format due
to the extensive proprietary parametric technology that we
integrate into our work. |
Can our 3D models be converted to real
scale models? |
No, not with today's technology. But don't
think we aren't working on it! |
What format do we require the Architects's
files to be in? |
We support many file formats including
DWG, DXF, DGN, PLN, PLA |
Why do the 3D pictures from the model
look so ugly and plastic? |
This is because they are a crude
structural representation only. We have done nothing to
make them look good, color or furnish them. Many people
get confused because our structural proofs look so much
better than other companies "wire
frames", but don't think that they represent finished
artwork. |
